The collapse is not a theory. It is in the numbers. Apple's US commission revenue is down 18% in 2026 after courts banned fees on external payment links. US App Store consumer spending fell 6% in Q2 2026, reversing 9% growth a year earlier. The EU fined Apple 500 million euros and forced open payments. Google lost its own Epic case and must open the Play Store. Brazil, Japan, and China are all cutting or bypassing the tax. The courts opened the wall.
Now the agents drive through it. 2026 was the standards land grab: Google launched its commerce standard with Walmart, Target, Shopify, and 20+ giants behind it. Visa and Mastercard shipped agent payment rails. Coinbase's x402 crossed 165 million agent transactions within months. And Amazon started blocking shopping bots at its gates. When gatekeepers scramble, the open standards are already winning.
When AI agents buy direct, they route around the 30% tax and the walled garden. Distribution moves from the store to the standard. Whoever owns the standard owns the flow. The gatekeepers who taxed the app economy do not get to tax the agent economy.
