World fertility rate, children per woman: 5.0 in 1950, 2.25 in 2024, below the 2.1 replacement line by 2035 on my call, 10 years before the UN's late-2040s.
Babies born in China: 9.5 million in 2024, 7.9 million in 2025, the fewest since 1949, and the population shrinks for the 4th year running.
Countries where women average fewer than 1 child: China, South Korea, Singapore, Ukraine, Taiwan, Macao and Hong Kong; South Korea fell to 0.72 in 2023, spent $210 billion over 16 years, and got back to 0.80 in 2025.
Babies born in Italy in 2025: 355,000, the fewest since records began in 1862.
The birth-rate collapse is the biggest shift on this board and the one nobody votes on. 2 in 3 humans already live in a country that makes fewer babies than it needs. China: 7.9 million births in 2025, down 17% in 1 year, the fewest since Mao took power. South Korea: 0.72 children per woman in 2023, 0.80 after $210 billion. Italy: fewer births than in 1862.
Why? Not a mystery. Housing, childcare and education cost more than a second income covers. Women choose. The phone replaced the third child. Every rich country ends up here, and every poor country is on the same road: sub-Saharan Africa fell from 6.5 to 4.3 children since the 1950s.
The money hits in 3 waves. Pensions: fewer workers paying for more retirees, the pension math breaks. Labor: 85 million unfilled jobs by 2030. Growth: fewer minds, fewer ideas, slower economies.
Governments try 3 answers. Cash: South Korea spent $210 billion in 16 years for 0.08 of a child. Migration: the Gulf and America import workers, Europe argues. Machines: humanoids in the warehouses and the care homes, my $5 trillion call.
Then the outliers: Pavel Durov saying he has fathered more than 100 children by sperm donation, artificial-womb videos like EctoLife, a concept, not a clinic, Elon Musk warning that low birth rates end civilization.
My call: the world crosses below replacement by 2035. The UN says the late 2040s. The Lancet's IHME model says around 2030. I say 2035. Cash alone fails, migration decides who grows, and the robots raise the last generation.
